Kirklees specialist provision (KSP)
In Kirklees the Specialist Provision teams consist of specialist teachers and support staff who have practical experience of working with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in local mainstream schools.
The teams work with schools to support staff in promoting the educational inclusion and achievement of pupils with sensory needs (visual impairment and hearing impairment), physical impairment, those with SEMH needs and students with complex communication and interaction needs, which includes those with autistic spectrum condition (ASC).

What specialist provision outreach teams can offer
An initial meeting with school staff and parents. This helps to determine what support the Specialist Provision team can offer. This could include the following:
- an observation of the pupil in school and other settings;
- supporting schools to develop a clear package of support;
- strategies to support the pupil in school;
- direct support for the pupil involved, if appropriate. This may include modelling techniques for school staff to implement;
- training and advice for school based staff;
- liaison with other agencies with permission from parents;
- linking with parents and carers;
- offering advice for transitions, this can include key transitions such as moving from primary school to secondary school

Meet the Outreach Team (Ethos Academy Trust)+
Ethos Academy Trust Outreach team is made up of specialist teachers, SENDCOs and Inclusion Workers who all have extensive experience of working within mainstream and specialist settings. The Specialist teacher/SENDCOs consult with schools to offer advice on applying the graduated approach to ensure the best provision is available for pupils with SEMH in their setting. Inclusion Workers model strategies and interventions to key staff in schools in order to upskill their workforces.

The Inclusion Support Offer (ISO) is a service for education professionals who are working with children and young people with SEND.
The ISO is part of the Kirklees SEND Local Offer, there are lots of tools, advice and guidance and help available for education professionals.
Professionals who may use this service include SENCO’s, headteachers, class teachers and early education professionals (including those within the private, voluntary and independent sectors).
The ISO provides information, advice and guidance relating to anything to do with SEND this could be about any of the following:
- Help with IEP’s, support plans and provision maps as well as what other tools could be used.
- Understanding what support is available from other services in Kirklees (such as from health and social care)
- Help to understand what support can be put in place at a Quality First Teaching level
- Academic progress of those with SEND
- Social and emotional difficulties
- Transitions to another school or transitions into your setting
The ISO is staffed by two full time members of staff with extensive experience of supporting children, young people and families with SEND.

SEMH Pilot (2020-21)+
During the first two terms of 2020/21 a free pilot was offered to six schools across Kirklees, this involved three secondary schools and three primary schools. The aim was to reduce the permanent exclusion trend and increase the knowledge and offer around the graduated approach for SEMH within the pilot schools.

Transition Support - 2022/23+
The Ethos Academy Trust Outreach Team have developed an additional support system for pupils who have received Outreach support in the last academic year. Some learners could find the transition to secondary particularly challenging, this is more acute now following the pandemic. Simple but very effective elements to successful transition include:
- Ensure that students experience success in their learning so they stay engaged in education.
- Develop a culture that welcomes and supports all students, particularly vulnerable ones. Leaders are typically important in introducing a culture that accepts responsibility for meeting student needs and developing flexible and innovative responses to all students’ learning and wellbeing.
- Identify vulnerable students before their entry into the secondary school, and as they transition between classes in a secondary school.
- Have processes in place to monitor the wellbeing and progress of all students, especially vulnerable students. Make sure you are able to provide them with ongoing support in socio-emotional spheres.
- Continue to offer support to students throughout the year not just in the initial weeks.
- Adopt a responsive and solutions-oriented approach to working through issues of students not adjusting to their new school.
